Clippers Release Sam Dekker's Job After Reaching Agreement with Cavaliers

August 5, 2018

The forward comes to Cleveland to fill the position vacated by Lebron James. The Los Angeles Clippers release a spot on their roster.

Life begins after Lebron James for Cleveland. A few days ago they extended the contract of power forward Kevin Love in an attempt to make it a benchmark in Ohio and now they acquire the young forward Sam Dekker.

Dekker came to the professional basketball league in 2015 selected by the Rockets at No. 18. Two seasons later, he was transferred to Los Angeles to accompany Blake Griffin at the Staples Center. Now he seeks to consolidate himself as a starter in his third NBA squad.

Adrian Wojnarowski, insider at the National Basketball Asotiation, reported that the deal will be closed until next Tuesday and that the Clippers will not receive players in return, but that the deal will be in exchange for money or future considerations.

At the moment, Dekker will have to report to the Quicken Loans Arena for Tyronn Lue to start arming the team without James and with reduced chances to repeat as champions of the East.

The two sides were working on the parameters of the exchange, which could include cash or future considerations, the sources said. But Cleveland won't change a player back to the Clippers.

The Clippers are making the move to clear a spot on the list. The exchange is not expected to be finalized until Monday or Tuesday.

Dekker, a three-year NBA veteran, played his first two seasons with the Houston Rockets, who selected him with the 18th pick in 2015 in Wisconsin.

He was acquired by the Clippers last June at the Chris Paul trade.

Dekker averaged 4.2 points and 2.4 rebounds in 12.1 minutes per game last season.

Dekker's trade allows Clippers to ditch a much-needed spot before training camp begins in late September. Not including point guard Patrick Beverley, who has an unsecured contract, Los Angeles has 15 guaranteed seats and will have to resign or trade another player before the start of the season if Beverley is to be retained.

For Cleveland, the trade provides depth to the front position with restricted free agent Rodney Hood still unsigned.

The Cavaliers will acquire Dekker's $ 2.8 million expired contract with the $ 5.8 million trade exception created from Kyrie Irving's trade with Boston last August. The Clippers will now have a $ 2.8 million exception.
